THE PROGRAM
Environmental Awareness Program in Schools
Since 2007 NGO ECOWEEK has implemented a program of environmental awareness
screenings in schools throughout the Attica region and throughout Greece.
This progarm includes a successful series of screenings of environmental
Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" with Al Gore
in Attica municipalities such as Korydalos, Kifisia, Melissia, Helleniko,
and also in Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklio (Crete), Aegina, Cofu, and Lesvos
in cooperation with local municipalities, NGOs, companies, and other organizations.
In the past ECOWEEK has undetaken initiatives such as a lecture by Al Gore
in Athens, and a lecture by legendary UK explorer Robert Swan (in cooperation
with Megaron Plus and the British Council respectively).
A program of environmental screenings was also implemented in the Greek
army, with the appropriate permissions, and a series of screenings in
schools, as part of the ECOWEEK
2008 program in Cyprus in cooperation with Larnaka Municipality and
MKC City College.
The environmental screening program has reached a population of more than
10,000 students, teachers and educators, in public and private schools across
the country. The program was implemented primarily in High Schools (Gymnasio
and Lykeio), but in some cases 6th grade students were also included.
ECOWEEK expresses its gratitude
to OSRAM and VESTAS for supporting the school screening program
and the
British Council for their cooperation in this program. Also,
the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for a grant to support the environmental
screening program in schools of the Ilia Prefecture. We thank VELTIOTIKI-G.PAPPAS
for the genrous gift of one organic-waste composter to each school that
participates in the program. Finally, the 21OTA Association of Municipalities
for their support and cooperation in the screening program in schools of
the 21 Municipalities of Northeastern Attika region.
